To be is to be contingent: nothing of which it can be said that "it is" can be alone and independent. But being is a member of paticca-samuppada as arising which contains ignorance. Being is only invertible by ignorance.

Destruction of ignorance destroys the illusion of being. When ignorance is no more, than consciousness no longer can attribute being (pahoti) at all. But that is not all for when consciousness is predicated of one who has no ignorance than it is no more indicatable (as it was indicated in M Sutta 22)

Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood

A Note on Jews and Feminism

My recent review of Janice Fiamengo’s The Goddess that Failed cited her summary of a study by four Israeli social psychologists of a personality trait they called “TIV,” or the Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood. Fiamengo considered it valuable as a description of a kind of woman frequently met with in feminist circles, and I agree. I also noted in my review that the Israeli origin of the researchers might not be an accident: readers of this site are familiar with the salience of victimhood within the self-concept of many Jews. I did not explore this question in the review, because I wished to keep the focus on Prof. Fiamengo’s ideas, but will try to address it briefly here.

Here, as a reminder, is Fiamengo’s summary of the TIV type:

Passionate belief in one’s victimhood creates an identifiable personality type, one that ruminates on grievance and interprets all experiences through the victimhood lens. Belief in victimhood need have no correlation with actual experience of victimization. The victim personality is characterized above all by a strong need to have one’s suffering recognized. With this need comes a conviction of immaculate morality, a resulting inability to accept criticism or disagreement, and a profound lack of empathy for those perceived as enemies. The researchers also found that people with a victim personality believe themselves justified in taking revenge on those who appear to oppress them. Even when presented with facts and evidence to rebut their beliefs, they are unwilling to relinquish their worldview, which becomes intimately associated with their sense of self. Anger at others and the belief in innocent victimhood create a toxic stew of self-righteousness and moral blindness.

A look at the original paper by the Israeli psychologists (which can be read here)* reveals that the ethnic angle did not escape the authors’ attention. They refer explicitly to the cult of the holocaust, and recognize that it can represent a moral hazard for their own people by way of the TIV personality. Good for them: we all know what epithet would have been assigned to any gentile researcher bold enough to make the same point.

Group differences are statistical, and the TIV personality presumably occurs at different rates in different races and ethnicities. It is likely to be elevated among Jews, although it would probably be futile to expect any objective research on this question in our current cultural and intellectual environment. But the TIV type can and does occur within other races.

Indeed, much group conflict over the past forty years has been aptly described as a “victimhood sweepstakes” wherein not only Jews and feminists but blacks, homosexuals, the handicapped, and other identity groups competitively jockey for moral authority by signaling their victimhood. The only group not allowed to participate in the sweepstakes—White, heterosexual, able-bodied men—are by now a distinct minority of the American population (possibly a third). So the increasing prominence of the personality type described by these Israeli researchers would seem to help explain many aspects of our historical moment, and not just feminism or Jewish-gentile conflict.

Anyone who writes against feminism as I do eventually encounters the thesis that it is all simply a product of Jewish subversion, often backed up with long lists of prominent Jewish second-wave feminists. Here is a popular graphic currently doing the rounds on the internet that embodies this thinking: (under the text)

This view is historically myopic: it requires that one’s familiarity with feminism be limited to the American second wave, usually dated from 1963. But feminist ideas have been widely circulating in the West since the eighteenth century, and not only in the form of Mary Wollstonecraft’s celebrated tract. A review of long-forgotten German debates for and against the “emancipation of women” in the 1780s and -90s, for example, reveal that there is not much novel in twentieth century feminism (cf. Klaus Epstein’s The Genesis of German Conservatism pp. 229–236). Indeed, we have plentiful evidence that similar ideas were discussed in ancient Athens, as witness book 5 of Plato’s Republic and Aristophanes’ comedy The Assemblywomen. Western man did not need the Jews to invent feminism for us.

It remains true, however, that Jews have been massively overrepresented in second wave feminism—by far the most successful version, as they have been in other forms of twentieth-century radicalism, and this calls for explanation. A good place to start might be the work of the above-discussed Israeli psychologists on the Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood. If Jews are indeed especially susceptible to this “toxic stew of self-righteousness and moral blindness,” it would explain much of their involvement in destructive movements such as feminism without our having to assume the existence of a conscious conspiracy to subvert alien races.

Women can destroy any society to which they belong simply by refusing to be wives and mothers

Second Thoughts from an Ex-Feminist

The Goddess that Failed: Feminism’s Unending War Against Men, Families, and Civilization Itself

Janice Fiamengo
New English Review Press, 2026

Janice Fiamengo, born 1964, is a retired professor of English at the University of Ottawa. Entering the academy as an impressionable young woman in the 1980s, her initial acceptance of feminism must have been almost a foregone conclusion: “I have felt its euphoric exultation and its self-flattering conviction of moral purity,” she admits. She studied all the standard feminist texts and for many years took the validity of their analysis for granted. But The Goddess that Failed is not her personal story. However her disillusionment came about, she began speaking out against the movement in 2012. Her work can be followed online at The Fiamengo File. https://substack.com/@fiamengofile

The author does not blunt her message with any assumption that there must originally have been a good, moderate, or reasonable feminism that was later hijacked, betrayed, or taken to excess by wayward followers. She reminds us, for example, that the campaign for women’s suffrage in the United Kingdom over a century ago escalated from heckling politicians and smashing shop windows to arson attacks on homes and churches. Some suffragettes concocted letter bombs out of phosphorous and sulfuric acid. One threw a hatchet at Prime Minister Asquith:

Through all the destruction of property, threat to livelihoods, and physical harm to innocent bystanders, the suffragettes saw themselves as sacrificial heroines. Like many terrorists, they envisioned their cause as pure enough to justify nearly any level of violence…. They were successful in their campaign at least in part because the men they castigated as villains couldn’t bear to deal firmly with their maudlin claims and dangerous acts.

Fiamengo knows that a crucial element in feminism’s success has been the strong natural bias in favor of women that characterizes both sexes: a synergy between female in-group preference and the male protective instinct. There has been some objective research on this timeless phenomenon. In 1994, for example, psychologists Alice Eagly and Antonio Mladinic reported that both male and female research subjects were more likely to ascribe positive traits to women than to men, with the bias measurably stronger in women; they christened this the “women-are-wonderful” effect. Later studies found women’s in-group bias four and a half times stronger than men’s. In 2019 British psychologists Martin Seager and John Barry developed the concept of “Gamma bias” to describe “unconscious prejudice against men and boys,” as observed in the tendency of both men and women to sympathize more with women than men.

Such studies are valuable, but as with much of social psychology, they merely confirm something that has always been widely known: men are expected to put the needs of women and children first. As Fiamengo points out, feminists could never have achieved the success they have if men were remotely similar to the selfish brutes they depict. Even half a century of feminist fury has been unable to do away with men’s natural bias in women’s favor.

The other side of male bias in women’s favor is what the author calls “the empathy gap”—the often-shocking inability or unwillingness of many women to empathize with male suffering. She recounts that after the sinking of the Titanic, a group of women survivors organized to build a memorial to the men who had sacrificed themselves in the women’s favor:

Some feminists refused gratitude, noting that men had built the ship and therefore could be expected to take their lumps when it proved faulty. Some proclaimed with fury that women suffered daily under men’s cruelty; a single day of suffering and death paled by comparison.

During the First World War, thousands of British women participated in a mass-shaming ritual of their menfolk, accosting any man they found in civilian clothing to present him with a white feather as a symbol of his cowardice. They accompanied the gesture with rehearsed speeches making clear their furious contempt: “Why don’t you fellows enlist? Your King and Country want you. We don’t.” This went on for the entire duration of the war, and feathers were even given to wounded men on leave or underage boys. One sixteen-year-old was so mortified by the bullying that he lied about his age in order to enlist and was promptly killed. Fiamengo also mentions an officer awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery; that same day he changed into civilian clothes only to be given a white feather by some female passers-by: “He accepted without a word and, as a curiosity, put it with his V.C. He remarked to a friend that he was probably the only man who ever received on the same day emblems of bravery and cowardice.” The man later died at the front.

Such attitudes continue to this day, as feminists brag online about “bathing in male tears” and exult over various instances of male suffering.

The similarities between feminism and Marxism have long been noted: indeed, as far back as 1884, Friedrich Engels explicitly drew a parallel between wives and the oppressed proletariat. Most importantly, feminism shares the Marxist mental gestalt whereby society is envisaged in terms of conflicting innocent and guilty groups. As Fiamengo observes, this leaves feminism unable to affirm any universal principles of justice: “it is incapable of extending empathy to whose it has been taught to see as oppressors” or “of demanding accountability from those it has been taught to see as victims.” Because of this inability, “one of feminism’s biggest lies has been its declared aim to overthrow traditional Western gender arrangements in order to liberate men as well as women into an equal partnership.”

This last remark is a useful reminder: in the more optimistic days of early “second wave” feminism, back in the 1970s, the movement did indeed claim to seek the liberation of men as well as women from traditional arrangements. Female careerism, e.g., would supposedly ease the burden upon husbands to be sole providers for their families. Such talk has now largely disappeared.

The parallel with Marxism is instructive here as well. Officially, socialist revolution was supposed to liberate the bourgeoisie as well as the working class from the “alienation” that characterizes capitalism. The sons of capitalists would one day join hands with the sons of the proletariat in order to build the classless society of the future, and the unfortunate but necessary stage of “merciless class struggle” would barely survive as a memory. But Marxist practitioners such as Lenin quickly became too preoccupied with killing the class enemy to worry much about healing him of his capitalist alienation.

A similar development can be observed in feminism as well: an involuntarily divorced husband would not make much headway in family court by appealing to the supposed feminist goal of reducing his burdens as a provider. “The last thing aimed at by feminism,” Fiamengo notes, “is the liberation of men from their traditional roles and obligations.” Feminists alternate opportunistically between their explicit egalitarian ideology and appeals to traditional notions of male duty; logical consistency is not important to them.

For this reason, close analysis of feminist doctrine is perhaps of less use in making sense of the movement than a look at the psychological rewards it provides to adherents. A relevant 2020 study involving researchers from America and—perhaps not accidentally—Israel identifies what it calls “TIV,” the Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood, as a stable personality trait involving a chronic, deep-seated feeling of being a victim across many different relationships and situations. Fiamengo summarizes:

Fiamengo notes that many young women experience something like a religious conversion upon “finding” feminism: “adherents feel washed clean, reborn, filled with purpose and zeal…. All of life’s dissatisfactions make sense and can be blamed on the oppressive system. Nothing is one’s own fault.”

Caption on Fiamengo’s website: Feminism Cannot Be Reformed

Obviously, not all women are feminists. American conservatives have long taken comfort from the well-attested finding that a majority of women express reservations about the label. But all radical movements involve a small, hard core and a far larger and fuzzier periphery, and feminism’s periphery now extends deeply into Western society. Fiamengo writes that, while she tries to maintain the distinction between women and feminists, this can sometimes be difficult.

A 2020 Pew poll found that only 19% of American women say the term feminist describes them “very well,” but another 42% say it describes them “somewhat well.” So that makes 61% unwilling to distance themselves from feminism unambiguously. A closer examination of the other 39% would probably reveal plenty of feminist influence as well. As the author notes, most women now take for granted that they belong to a “historically oppressed group,” and accept as a matter of course that special legal protections and government programs should promote their advancement and well-being. People cannot be marinated in an ideology their entire lives without coming to believe that at least some of its claims must be true. Fiamengo also mentions the phenomenon of “confirmation bias:” applying a feminist lens when viewing the world helps one see evidence supporting it while screening out contradictory information.

The author is under no illusions that feminism can be reformed:

Even today, half a century after the implementation of equity hiring programs as well as ceaseless female empowerment campaigns in schools and universities, many women are still angry and many men still trying to make amends. It must be stopped. We will never reach a point where feminists decide to call off the gender war, accepting that men have done enough for them. There will never come a point where the suffering of boys and men matters more to feminists than their own power.

Women can destroy any society to which they belong simply by refusing to be wives and mothers. Feminism brings such a refusal about by directly undermining women’s ability to love. No less than other hostile forces discussed on this website, it is a deadly threat to European Civilization.

From replays:

StrathClydesays

I’ve studied this issue for a few years and have come to a few conclusions.
Firstly, as the authoress of the book states, there is no ‘correct’ Feminism. Feminism in all it’s guises and methods is a disease. But it’s also a disease caused by a precedent.
Secondly, it is incorrect to lay the blame for Feminism at only the doorstep of the Jews. As with many ‘issues’ of our age, the soil was first ripe for it’s poisoning. Beginning in the 19th century, men of the West began the process of becoming feminized. We advanced our civilization and societies too fast. Treitschke, was one of a number of commentators writing in the end of the 19th century who complained of it in his time and place. This feminization of the White race was enormously exacerbated in Europe in particular by the dysgenic processes caused by two fratricidal world wars. These were wars the scale of which had no precedent, and as such, the dysgenic results also has no precedent in terms of scale (though there were precedednts in a smaller scale following, for example, Greece [5th cent. BC] and Rome’s own [1st cent. BC] fratricidal wars). British-Italian social philosopher Anthony M. Ludovici wrote of it extensively following the First World War (see ‘Man: An Indictment'[1927] and Woman: A Vindication'[1929]). David S. Jordan’s book, ‘War and The Breed’, written specifically on the topic of the dysgenic cost of the industrial slaughter of the First World War is also very much worth reading.
Thirdly, and directly connected to the above, women did not simply ‘adopt’ Feminism and declare war on men. Women are built as reactive creatures, and throughout the entire history of civilization, men have always been the tone-setters, the arbiters. Or at least, they’re meant to be. But Nature deplores a vacuum. The men became feminized, lost too many of the old masculine qualities, the women became masculinized and – most crucially – the women (at the collective-unconscious level) subtly lost respect for their menfolk.
Lastly, the most profound conclusion I have come to is that Feminism and many other aspects of recalcitrant behaviour exhibited by females (“the women are out of control”) are all efforts towards provoking men in order to elicit a response from men that may befit the default masculine nature of their ancestors – one of God’s/Nature’s great attempts at ‘resetting’ for the sake of returning to a healthier equilibrium. The problem – for many, many decades now – is that men have not been responding the way women/Nature/God would prefer and have instead been accomodating women’s displeasing unwomanly behaviours (the ‘tests’) and worse, giving them more extensive opportunities to displace us and undermine masculinity that remains in our civilization.
The women give the ‘tests’, but the men have been failing them, again and again and again (“Refugees Welcome”). The modern phenomenon of White women actively seeking out new arrivals right off the boats (often at cost of their lives – proof they are acting at an unconscious level) is a classic example of this GOADING that I am talking about. These women – unconsciously, making use of the ‘skills’ gifted to her by nature/God, are trying to provoke a reaction from the menfolk by using the interlopers as pychological weapons; they are trying to trigger a reaction that would result in the resetting of the national fabric to a status that is more conducive to a safer, healthier and more beneficial state for all the natives through extirpation of the interlopers. But the men are not doing this and the women willc keep performing these ‘tests’ until the men finally colectively respond, respond in a manner that is strictly exclusive of the trends of modernity or the wishes of foreigners. In their soul, Womankind understands that it’s the menfolk who determine the course of civilzation and whether the race thrives & multiplies or declines and dies out.
“The women are out of control” Because the men have lost the will to control them.
Feminism is more about men than women.

F. Roger Devlin:

I agree that women are unconsciously hoping for us to take charge and restrain them. But this is difficult when doing so is considered “violence against women” and gets you jailed. So many men are simply shunning them altogether instead.

Replacement Migration & Hypergamy

Note: This text is based on an address given November 2016 in Washington, DC.

Many of you have probably seen my byline but may not know me by sight. I write a lot about relations between men and women. Sometimes men in nationalist movements fail to appreciate the relevance of this subject to our political struggle as a people. Women don’t usually have that problem. They know that they control the perpetuation of our race, and in the final analysis, that’s almost all that matters. Feminists like to say that the personal is political, and on this point at least, they are correct: our political cause depends on stable marriages and families.

I would like to begin by drawing your attention to an article published in a Norwegian newspaper three and a half years ago. Some of you may remember the flurry of discussion it occasioned at the time. The article appeared in one of the few Norwegian publications not dependent on government subsidies, and therefore free to tell the truth about the situation in that country. It was based on interviews with two young men from Groruddalen, a suburban area outside Oslo that has enjoyed more cultural enrichment than any other place in that country, mostly from Pakistani and Somali Muslims. The two young men reflect on the challenges of coming to manhood in such an environment.

They report that there is a clear hierarchy among the local boys, and native Norwegians are at the bottom of it. They are often physically attacked by the immigrant boys in the local schools. Authority figures such as teachers tell the Norwegian boys never to retaliate, even when punched. The immigrant boys are to be pitied, they are told, because they come from countries which have suffered from war—even though some are third-generation immigrants by now.

The young Muslims are quick to perceive their inviolability, of course, and take full advantage of it. As one of the interviewees put it, “they talk about respect, but they don’t show any.” They have various contemptuous slang terms for their Norwegian peers, such as “whitey” and “potato.” They stare aggressively at them on the streets, and the Norwegian boys must lower their gaze first if they do not want to face an unequal fight there and then.

And the fights are always unequal. The European concept of a “fair fight” does not exist in the Muslim mind. “If you meet them alone,” said one interviewee, “they are cowards.” They travel and hunt in packs like dogs, and only attack the natives where they enjoy a clear superiority of force. Seven or eight against one is not uncommon. Furthermore, practically all of these boys dispose of large family networks: brothers, uncles, cousins who are glad to help them avenge any perceived slights. Most of the Norwegian boys, on the other hand, are children of divorce living with their mothers. Because of the low native birth rate, a majority do not even have any male siblings.

Seeing themselves on the bottom of the local totem pole, some of these Norwegian boys have actually begun to mimic the grammatical mistakes and limited vocabulary of the immigrant boys in an effort to raise their status. A handful have actually converted to Islam. But the most interesting part of this article to me is one interviewee’s description of the sexual consequences of this social experiment as described by one of the interviewees. The Muslim boys, he says, can chase Norwegian girls, but we cannot go after theirs. It’s something you learn early on. You just don’t go after a Pakistani girl, but Norwegian girls are available to immigrant boys. Norwegian girls prefer them. I don’t know why. That they are tough, that they have money despite not having jobs. The girls don’t see that they fight in packs, that they are cowards. I asked my best female friend if we could get romantically involved. And she told me that I have the right personality, but the problem was that I’m Norwegian. She wants to become involved with a foreigner.

Well, that young man may not understand why Norwegian girls prefer immigrant boys, but I do: sexual behavior is not under the control of the prefrontal cortex responsible for rational thought, but the limbic system, sometimes popularly known as the “reptilian brain” since it is primitive enough that we share it with reptiles. The female’s limbic instinct is to mate with dominant men—and it does not matter how such dominance is achieved. Reptiles, after all, are even farther from grasping the concept of a fair fight than Muslims. Norwegian girls either do not perceive or are unconcerned that their male peers face overwhelming odds, that the entire political and social regime of their country has been set up as if with the specific intention of disadvantaging them at the expanse of low-IQ thugs from the slums of Karachi. All the girls see is that Norwegian boys are getting beaten up and immigrant boys are doing the beating. Their natural impulse is to mate with the beaters, not the beatees.

Speaking more generally, women are less loyal to the tribe into which they are born than are men, and there are evolutionary reasons for this. In our environment of evolutionary adaptation, our remote ancestors lived in bands of fifty to a hundred persons whose men were frequently fighting one another. To be successful in such fights, men had to practice loyalty to the other men of their own tribe. When they were successful, they took the women of the vanquished tribe for themselves. This did not generally create any problem for those women. They formed new bonds with the newly dominant men quickly and easily. When men perceive that their side is losing, they redouble their efforts; women simply switch sides. The female instinct is to subordinate all other considerations to the successful rearing of children. Loyalty to their defeated menfolk would interfere with the fulfillment of this natural imperative, so they do not usually practice it. Exceptions are possible, but uncommon enough that they deserve special mention.

One case from American history has always especially impressed me. Pretty much all the sources agree that Yankee soldiers who took part in the military occupation of the American South during reconstruction got absolutely nowhere with the local women. The wives and sisters of men who had been overwhelmingly defeated—crippled and killed in many cases—remained loyal to these men, or to their memory, even at the expense of their own reproductive success. I’m not sure anything I have read about the Lost Cause has struck me with greater admiration for the defeated South. Female loyalty to tribe is certainly possible, and I hope we will know how to honor it where it occurs. At the same time, we would be wise not to count too much upon it. As I said, our evolutionary history has given women a facility in adapting to circumstance and a natural preference for the victorious, even in the unfairest of fights.

Muslim men stick to their own women when it is time to raise a family. They will happily use Western women for physical gratification if the opportunity presents itself, but they despise them as “Norwegian whores.” This may be one reason the women are so attracted to them: the female preference for dominance in males is very deeply rooted. It does not matter that they can have no future with such men.

So the exogamous Western women generally end up alone once they hit their thirties. I hope that when the time comes, Norwegian men will find the strength not to take pity on such women. If you want to discourage undesirable behavior, nothing is more effective than total ruthlessness. It’s masculine, it’s dominant, it’s attractive, and it’s one reason Norwegian women go for immigrant men in the first place. So in this respect, if no other, European men would be wise to imitate the foreign men among whom they are forced to live with and learn to be ruthless.

Let me give you an historical analogy. It is recorded that there was once a wave of suicides by young women in ancient Athens. If this happened today, emergency hotlines would be set up and psychotherapists dispatched to counsel the girls and find out what was troubling them. Instead, the city assembly simply decreed that the naked body of the next girl to commit suicide would go on display in the Agora. It wasn’t very kind, but there were no further suicides.

Similarly, a policy of writing off women who take up with their swarthy oppressors would be one way for Western man to regain a part of his dignity. It would also be eugenic, as tending to flush disloyalty from our gene pool.

The Remigration Movement Solidifies

When the first Remigration Summit went forward last year in a small town near Milan, Italy, organizers had to count as a success that it managed to happen at all, so fierce was opposition from leftist groups and establishment politicians. This year’s event in the small Portuguese town of Figueira da Foz demonstrated that the remigration movement is here to stay. There were no venue cancellations, thanks to a sympathetic owner who laughed off threats and demands. Whereas police swarmed last year’s summit to prevent trouble, this year no visible police protection was necessary. Attendance jumped from 300 to 600, and the mood was confident and at times jubilant.

Afonso Gonçalves welcomed attendees and marveled at “so many good-looking people!” before handing things over to master of ceremonies Manuel Morgado. Mr. Morgado thanked the event’s sponsors and remarked on the appropriateness of holding it on May 30, the Feast Day of Saint and King Ferdinand III of Castile, under whose Christian leadership a large part of the Iberian Peninsula was reconquered from the Moors. The obvious implication was that our task of taking back Europe is a continuation of his struggle in the thirteenth century, but King Ferdinand probably did not have to fight against so much opposition from men of his own race and faith.

Mr. Gonçalves was the first speaker. He reminded us that, although getting stronger, we are still swimming against the tide: the anti-European Left remains entrenched in all our institutions, and the NGO SOS Racism formally requested that the Portuguese government cancel this event. Portugal is a country of only ten million people, and is home to two million immigrants. There are more foreign than native births in many towns, and many Portuguese wish to emigrate, yet the government is still allowing hundreds of thousands to come in and settle permanently. To be Portuguese, however, is not to possess a government-stamped paper saying one is Portuguese, but to be descended from the men who took their land back from the Moors in the Reconquista of the Middle Ages.

In 2023, Mr. Gonçalves founded the group Reconquista, which intends to take back Portugal for its natural sons once again. The group launched a petition to stop immigration last week and it already has 30,000 signatures. That means the Portuguese legislature is now required to receive him And to hear him speak in favor of remigration. This will be a huge media sensation because he is already well known throughout the country.

“We no longer care about being called racists, xenophobes, fascists, or extremists,” he noted, “but we will never be called traitors to our people.” Mr. Gonçalves does not believe there are many families in Portugal who have not at least seen a video or some other material put out by his group, and he has experienced the gratitude of ordinary fellow-countrymen despite being debanked and suffering other humiliations by the traitorous elites who cling to power.

The next speaker was Lena Kotré, a lawyer and provincial delegate of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. She noted significant progress since she spoke at last year’s first meeting in Milan. Nearly one-third of voters now understand that only her party stands for the preservation of the German nation.

The state is mobilizing enormous resources to keep patriots out of power, and imposing travel bans on her party’s supporters (something formerly associated with the East German Communist regime), but all of this reveals only their desperation. They resort to punishment because they have no arguments or facts on their side. These will intensify in the near future, and the establishment is now openly supportive of antifa terrorism, but “if that is the price we must pay to secure our nation, so be it.” Schoolchildren now speak openly and without fear of remigration, and little boys boast that they want to become police officers so they can deport foreigners.

The third speaker was Stefano Forte, president of the New York Young Republicans Club. He mentioned that 40 percent of New Yorkers now speak a language other than English at home, and many of these foreigners are the sort that “eat from our hands while they spit in our faces.” Remigration is not a mere political issue in the usual sense, but a question of survival. New York is currently governed by a radical Muslim mayor whose top lawyer represents al-Qaeda terrorists, and he cannot be allowed to replace native New Yorkers.

Mr. Forte’s group was the first Republican club to endorse Donald Trump, and it did so because the candidate said remigration will make America great again. People support remigration not because they hate but because they love: love their parents and their children and revere the civilized heritage passed down to them. “The West was bequeathed to us by our fathers to be passed on to our sons, and we will not be the generation that squanders our birthright.”

The next speaker was the director of the White Paper Policy Institute, Cyan Quinn, who spoke about birth rates. She began by citing American Congressman Steve King’s remark that “we can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”

Indian President Modi recently signed free-trade agreements with the European Union, which include significant migration components, but these were not publicized due to their unpopularity. India has twice the population of Europe and wants to export its young men. When they arrive, they both compete directly against native men for jobs and practice ethnic nepotism as a matter of course. They are also a fiscal net negative, compounding the crisis of the welfare state rather than solving it.

European birth rates are already low, and our own men often cannot find jobs or start families. European couples must wait for houses, while immigrants go to the head of the line. Remigration would make housing affordable.

Direct policy fixes for low fertility do not work long term: in countries as different as Denmark, Hungary, and Korea, baby bonuses or tax incentives have led to short-term gains quickly followed by drops.

Women now compete against men for jobs, lowering the number of men women consider “marriageable.” Quotas for women are maintained in many positions that women themselves do not even seem to want: plenty would prefer to stay home, but no one asks them. Married women with children are the happiest women. They do not like to out-earn their husbands, and husbands do not like being out-earned. We need policies that accept people as they are: letting women have children and letting men support them.

Earlier marriage must also be encouraged. Many women are now marrying at 35 or even older. The evidence is also clear that mere cohabitation does not lead to marriage.

Remigration creates optimism. Following the 2016 election of Donald Trump, Hispanic birth rates dropped, while white birth rates increased. Reducing diversity makes people optimistic and lowers pressure on public services. It will lead to a renewed flourishing of family life.

Maximilian Märkl is a German nationalist who was stopped at the airport by government officials who claimed his participation at the Remigration Summit would “damage the reputation of the Federal Republic of Germany.” He recorded a videotaped apology for not being able to make it, then jumped in his car and drove twenty-two hours to Portugal on the chance he might not be stopped. It worked: organizers played the videotaped apology, then produced the man on stage: thunderous applause greeted him.

Mr. Märkl noted that Europe’s rulers are committing a historic crime against their people and attempting to prevent them from even speaking about it. He does not want to force his son to fight a battle his father was too afraid to fight: “Today I am proud to be a European and to fight beside you for remigration.”

Lawyer Eva Vlaardingerbroek told the audience “You will save this continent by the grace of God, I am sure of it.” She observed that at last year’s Remigration Summit, much of Milan was in lockdown and police had to escort participants to the venue: this year none of that was necessary.

The situation is still dire: nearly every day brings a new story of a white boy or girl raped, stabbed, murdered. These deaths well represent the state of the continent in general. Almost all right-wing activists in Europe have been banned from at least some social media, and many are being investigated or on trial. Vlaardingerbroek herself was recently banned from the UK, an honor achieved by Martin Sellner and a number of others many years ago. But the term “remigration” is now central to political debate in Europe.

Recently, Vlaardingerbroek and her associates drew up the Save Europe Act, a citizens’ initiative which includes a demand for a total halt to non-Western immigration. The sponsors are aiming for one million signatures, and conference participants were invited to be among the first. Such a petition could, under European law, force the European Commission at least to address the issue of remigration and meet with its advocates. It will be a bad day for Ursula von der Leyen when she is forced to meet and shake hands with Martin Sellner. Readers can check out the text of the initiative at Save-Europe-Act.com.

After a break for lunch, Björn Höcke of the AfD greeted the conference by video. He said that immigration has led to the emergence of ethnic block voting, representing a danger to the European idea of democracy. Migration is not a “human right.” Nations, on the other hand, do have every right to decide with whom they wish to live. Although still kept out of power at the national level, the AfD has been working to introduce the idea of remigration at the provincial level. Mr. Höcke stressed that the European fight to preserve its homelands for its own posterity is morally just.

Next came lawyer and member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies Rocío de Meer, who noted that no generation has the right to undo what the work and sacrifice of many generations has handed down to it. The real “hate speech” comes from those who want to destroy our homelands. Foreigners from outside Europe are now entering Spain at a rate of one million a year, and remigration is the only course that can still save the nation.

The homeland derives from the family, and the cradle needs defending as well as the border: “Women should not need to ask permission of feminists to become mothers.” Birth rates are a spiritual as well as national issue, and both motherhood and fatherhood must have an honored place at the center of society. Our rulers tell us speaking this way is extremism, but asking Spaniards to remain silent as they slowly disappear is the true extremism. We are not condemned to replacement. We can choose, and what we are choosing is remigration and Spain.

Lidewij de Vos told attendees that for the past six weeks, news in the Netherlands has been dominated by the largest anti-immigration protest in its history. How did the government respond? Not with dialogue but by calling an emergency meeting to arrange the building of more asylum centers. Three hundred of these already exist, and were a major factor behind the protests. Local residents are never consulted when new ones are built.

The government pretends that protests against immigration lead to violence, while it is obvious to everybody that immigration itself has led to violence. Asylum seekers rape twenty times more frequently than Dutch men, and kill and steal at comparable rates. Our daughters and sons are being slaughtered on the altar of mass migration.

Closing the borders and abolishing the asylum system will not be enough: Even if migration stopped completely tomorrow, its effects will remain. Remigration is the only solution to the failure of multiculturalism, which Mrs. de Vos likened to a cruel forced marriage. Somali immigrants, for example, cost the state €800,000 per person: paying them to leave is a bargain by comparison. The goal is net negative migration to preserve the Netherlands as a home for the Dutch people. What we want is humane and durable.

Especially loud applause greeted Mrs. de Vos’s mention that she is expecting a child, and she noted that her child’s future is what motivates her to continue the fight.

Retired US Border Patrol commander-at-large Gregory Bovino noted that the US and Europe have differed on many questions over the years, but with regards to remigration their interests are identical: on both continents, the same problem requires the same solution.

Little Village is a part of Chicago that local police recommended Mr. Bovino and his agents avoid due to the amount of violence there. It is home to tens of thousands of Central and South Americans. In the fall of 2025, they hit it hard, and Mr. Bovino was shocked by what he saw: crumbling buildings, crumbling infrastructure, trash all over. MS-13 placed a $10,000 bounty on Border Patrol agents, and one of $50,000 on Mr. Bovino personally. Anarchists and rioters arrived to interfere with the Border Patrol’s work, and agents simply arrested them by the dozens as well.

Such actions require careful preparation: The border patrol develops a strategy for five years before they go into an area. They have learned to maintain their own media apparatus to counter hostile reporters. Eighty million Americans voted for remigration, said Mr. Bovino, and the Border Patrol is delivering it. His speech was greeted with shouts of “USA! USA! USA!”

Former French Member of the European Parliament Jean-Yves Le Gallou focused his remarks on the problem of judicial usurpation of powers not properly belonging to them. In 2023, France’s legislature adopted an immigration policy which was far from ideal but contained some restrictive measures; France’s constitutional council, a kind of supreme court, struck down three quarters of these.

Mr. Le Gallou related the story of a civil servant who presided over Frontex, the European Union’s border and coast guard agency. This man worked to stop illegal immigration, which was part of his job description, and got accused by judges of “crimes against humanity” as a result. Judicial overreach is a problem in many European countries, and all in public life are intimidated by it. Legislators and politicians resort to self-censorship. There are many international agreements that can be interpreted almost at will, and this is precisely what European judges do. European conventions ratified in the 1950s to protect displaced persons after WWII are now being used to bring the entire world to France. Such power is not answerable to the voters or anyone else, and takes no account of the practical effects of its decisions. For example, a French court recently decided that every woman in Afghanistan has a right to residence in France.

The European people must resume full sovereignty over the laws and administrative decisions pronounced in their name, and judges must be made to follow the law. Power must be returned to the people of Europe through referenda where possible, elsewhere by parliamentary legislation.

Sammy Woodhouse, survivor of a Rotherham grooming gang, offered a moving account of her ordeal. At the age of fourteen, she met a 24-year-old Pakistani man through a friend of hers. He had only recently been released from prison. He gradually drew her into his circle, where the abuse began. She was abducted on many occasions and held for weeks at a time in hotels. As time went on, the abuse became more violent, including beatings and rape. On her fifteenth birthday, she was forced to participate in an armed robbery; she was arrested, while the Pakistani man went free. She had one abortion and attempted suicide on multiple occasions.

Authorities had known about abuse such as this for decades, but would simply lie about the evidence. Miss Woodhouse was among the first to take legal action against the police, who finally agreed to carry out a full investigation of her case: the largest child abuse investigation in British history. She was urged not to go public with her experience in order not to “jeopardize the investigation.” She did so anyway, and it jeopardized nothing. Many other victims began coming forward. Cases emerged of children as young as eleven being tortured, sometimes to the accompaniment of readings from the Koran. DNA evidence was ignored and other evidence was actually destroyed by the police, who called the girls prostitutes or slags and even arrested parents they found troublesome. Miss Woodhouse is author of the memoir Just a Child, and continues to educate the public about grooming gangs. Through her work, children conceived in rape have been legally recognized as a victim class.

Milan Mazurek is a Slovak member of the European Parliament who made a stir by announcing in that body that “white lives matter.” He notes that anti-white propaganda remains stronger in Western Europe, but is appearing in former Warsaw Pact nations such as Slovakia. Leading politicians from his country have promised the WEF to import Indians and Uzbeks. Ukraine is currently importing South Asians. Western Europeans must not believe that Eastern Europe remains a safe haven.

Mr. Mazurek warned against the dangers of petty nationalism while all of Europe is at risk. He is a member of the parliamentary group Europe of Sovereign Nations, within which traditional rivals such as Slovakia and Hungary cooperate rather than arguing over borders. “The enemy does not see any difference” between white nations. Europe of Sovereign Nations is currently sponsoring a bill to mandate the enforcement of deportation orders, now frequently ignored with impunity.

Some progress is occurring. The European Parliament has designated the nations of North Africa safe, meaning that refugees who cross these countries to get to Europe can no longer be considered legitimate refugees. But a sign of how much remains to be done was the EU Parliament’s recent award of the European Order of Merit to Angela Merkel, a woman guilty of destroying borders and thereby abetting the rape and murder of innocent Europeans.

Martin Sellner, cofounder of the Identitarian Movement of Austria in 2012, noted that there are now at least 95 million citizens voting for patriotic parties across Europe. Social-media sites are overflowing with identitarian messages. And yet this success has not translated into real power. Mr. Sellner reports that he has just founded the Remigration Institute as a lobby for remigration. Politics works through pressure, he noted, and even nationalist parties will not enact remigration unless pressured to do so: “If you cannot reward and punish politicians, you do not exist in their world.”

He cited America’s National Rifle Association as an example of how lobbying should be done: They monitor and judge legislators, rewarding loyalty and punishing betrayal. The Remigration Institute seeks to do the same for the remigration issue in Europe. Skill in spreading memes on social media represents the childhood of our activism; only once we create institutions feared by politicians will we have arrived at political adulthood. When the baby-boomers die off, white numbers will decline drastically, so we have roughly fifteen years left to save a 6,500-year-old heritage. This is our hour of decision, and what we do or fail to do now will echo into eternity. Let us become powerful!

2023 American Renaissance conference veteran Dries Van Langenhove was the final speaker at this second Remigration Summit. His talk was a reflection on the appalling judgment handed down against him just five days before in his native Belgium. For a second time, he was convicted of “hate speech” due to an entirely factual lecture he gave on the effects of immigration on living conditions and crime. The judge explicitly ruled that the truth of his statements was irrelevant to their status as “hate speech.”

Besides these two criminal convictions, Mr. Van Langenhove has had his house raided three times, was expelled from his university, and lost his bank account. He noted that nationalists are now starting their own bank to get around this danger, and we will probably have to create our own institutions in other spheres as well. But the struggle is worth it because mass migration is an existential crisis for Europe more serious than either the Black Death or the Second World War. All can yet be saved, and even our birth rates brought back to normal — but only if the project of remigration succeeds.

Meetings like this are an indispensable part of our struggle. There is nothing more inspiring than renewing ties with old friends and mixing with prominent movement leaders. As I savored the excitement and commitment in the room, I have no doubt that 600 people returned to their homes, more determined than ever to fight for their people and civilization.

Family As The Primal Form Of Community

While the economic aspect of marriage is badly neglected today, we are hardly uninterested in economic matters per se. On the contrary, money may be the one thing modern man obsesses over as much as sex. Our economic concerns, however, are concentrated on success and consumption in the market rather than on providing for home and children. That is remarkable, because the primary reason men have traditionally pursued wealth in the first place is that they have families to support (or wish to have them).

Elementary economics textbooks dutifully inform students that the word economy comes from the Greek term for household management. But no significance is attributed to that bit of information, and it may be the last time a student of economics ever hears households mentioned. “Economy” can still be found employed in its original domestic sense by Samuel Johnson and other 18th-century writers. Only gradually was its meaning extended metaphorically into “political economy,” the household management of the entire state, as it were. Once political economy had become a recognized discipline, “political” was dropped from the name as cumbersome and unnecessary to make the speaker’s meaning clear. Subsequently, the original sense faded from men’s minds. Factories and banks, not homes, came to be thought of as the principal settings of “economic” activity. Today we see journalists sloppily referring to the securities market as “the economy.” So completely has the market driven out consideration of the household that one economist, Gary Becker, has recently used marginal-utility theory in attempting to reinterpret the natural family itself as being the result of economically rational calculation.

There is something quite odd about trying to explain the primary and natural fact of procreation by means of the secondary and derivative behavior of the market. Consider, for example, the observable fact that many parents willingly risk their lives to protect their offspring. Such self-sacrificial behavior might be called transeconomic. People will not do that sort of thing for merely economic goods. (The stories of men jumping from hotel windows following the 1929 stock-market crash, by the way, originated in a comedy routine of the time.) While people “value” both resources and children, the two classes of goods seem to be incommensurable. Families are in large part the purpose of wealth.

The sale of children, indeed, is not unknown among the desperately poor. But the difficult question for any exclusively economic analysis would be to explain why such a practice is not normal and universal;  children most certainly consume enough resources to raise issues of “cost effectiveness.” The present writer hopes human beings never become that rational.

The economy of the home differs qualitatively as well as quantitatively from that of commercial enterprises or nations. The family actually does operate roughly according to the principle “from each according to his abilities; to each according to his needs.” This communist slogan is not, in other words, intrinsically utopian; it is only utopian to extend the principle universally, in defiance of the ineliminable qualitative differences between the natural family and political society. (Many socialist writers lose sight of the familial inspiration of their ideal, but in the original socialist utopia described in Plato’s Republic, Socrates explicitly recognizes that he is extending the preexisting familial principle to the polis.)

A second difference is that the home does not have a money economy. When the housewife of old spun wool to make clothing for her family, she was creating wealth—adding human value to raw materials—but the wealth found no monetary or numerical expression. So she could not calculate inputs and outputs, or the return on her invested labor. For that reason, muddle-headed feminists refer to the premodern woman’s domestic labor as “unpaid.”

Clearly, the traditional domestic economy was not “capitalist.” But what was it?

The  German sociologist Ferdinand Tönnies (1855-1936) famously distinguished two fundamental types of human connectedness: society and community. Of these, community is both conceptually and historically prior. It is characterized by ascribed (i.e., unchosen) statuses, affective attachments to persons and places, strong habits and traditions, and a common worship. Work within a community is understood in the Aristotelian sense of energeia, as the realization of a natural potency, the carrying out of a meaningful task or vocation. The family is the prototype of all community.

Society is characterized by chosen or achieved statuses, self-interest, individualism, impersonality, contract, and competition. Work is understood not as a calling but as a “job,” an unpleasantness to be endured for the sake of extrinsic rewards such as money and status. The particular nature of the enterprise in which one competes may be a matter of indifference (e.g., dope-dealing being as good as agriculture). The commercial enterprise is the textbook example of a society understood by way of contrast to a community.

Communities such as families, family-based small businesses, villages, and religious congregations are the natural nurseries of larger and looser societies such as cities and large-scale business corporations: societies presuppose communities in a way communities do not presuppose societies. But even as society arises out of community, it has an inherent tendency to erode the natural soil from which it grew. Advanced societies are often marked by a nostalgic “quest for community,” in Robert Nisbet’s phrase, but members of such societies often fail to appreciate that a return to community would necessarily entail a sacrifice in freedom of personal action—and possibly in material standard of living as well. These are the waters in which cult leaders and demagogues fish. Prominent among such false prophets in recent times have been feminists, calling the duties of married life “slavery” when they are in reality the indispensable basis for the family, and therefore of all real community.

Tönnies himself saw that his typological distinction is not sexually neutral: men can thrive in loose, competitive societies; women generally do not, or, if they do, they lose their femininity in the process. In prefeminist America, we may note, comfortably supported women with time on their hands often did volunteer work in their communities. Nothing is more foreign and terrible to a woman’s original inborn nature, observed Tönnies, than trade, than independence as a contracting party and possessor of money. (Supporting a wife need not, be it noted, involve giving her money.) Conversely, nothing has been a greater factor in the modern encroachment of society upon community than the emancipation of women from communal bonds and pursuits.

My citation of a 19th-century sociologist to clarify the nature of the family, by the way, would probably have bewildered Tönnies himself. He could safely assume his readers already knew what a family was, and he used the concept to clarify the nature of other communities. But today, after several decades of a state-sponsored cult of individual gratification, Western Man might just require a course in sociology to grasp matters that the rest of the world has always considered too natural and obvious for explanation.

On Samuel T. Francis

Early Aryan thought reflects a conviction of the existence of an objective order of things independent of the beliefs or wishes of men, and even of gods. This mental background certainly contributed to later European achievements in science and philosophy. It also bore ethical implications. Recognition of an objective cosmic order “implies that human action has consequences—that you cannot do whatever you please and expect nothing to come of it—and that no matter what you do you will not be able to avoid your Fate.” Yet Aryan myth affirms the value of life and struggle even as it accepts the inevitability of death and other limits upon human ambition.

[Good quote, apart that true ariyan rejects the inevitability of death]

In 1984 Sam produced his first substantial book, Power and History, a study of the political thought of James Burnham (1905-1987). After some years as a disciple of Leon Trotsky, Burnham broke with Marxism altogether in 1941 with publication of The Managerial Revolution. This book’s thesis was that bourgeois capitalism had been superceded neither by proletarian rule nor by a classless society, but by a new ruling elite centered on those possessing expertise in important technologies and the control of mass organizations: the managers. Whether the resulting regime claimed to be socialist (as in the USSR or National Socialist Germany) or preserved the name and some of the appearances of free enterprise (as in Franklin Roosevelt’s United States) was of comparatively little importance.

Burnham was also a student of the Italian school of elite theory, whose main ideas he summarized in his next book The Machiavellians (1943). In contrast to classical political thought, which emphasizes the threefold typology of monarchal, aristocratic, and democratic rule, elite theorists asserted an iron law of oligarchy: in any political regime, including supposedly absolute monarchies and democracies, a closer look will always reveal a small minority of men who command and a majority who obey. Robert Michels, for example, spent years studying the inner workings of European socialist parties, all of which advocated for the spreading of power to the broad masses. What he found was that all such parties were in fact under the command of a very few men. This was not a matter of hypocrisy, as the parties could not otherwise have operated effectively. Their stated ideals made no difference at all; it is simply in the nature of human organization for power to remain the preserve of a small elite.

Italian elite theory, combined with Burnham’s concept of the managerial class as the elite governing the contemporary world, would become fundamentals of Sam Francis’s own political thinking. The managers and technocrats who rule us today seek above all a passive and compliant subject population unbound by any traditions and at the farthest possible remove from republican self-government. The goal of a realistic right under such circumstances must be the replacement of this deadening and out-of-touch elite with a new one more representative of ordinary Americans from the heartland and their best traditions.

Sam’s book on James Burnham was not widely reviewed. A favorable notice from Joe Sobran in National Review was one honorable exception.

At some not easily specified time in the 1980s and -90s, Sam worked on a book entitled Leviathan and Its Enemies, applying Burnham’s ideas to American twentieth century political history and developing a Burnhamist strategy for Middle American Revolution in far greater detail than Burnham himself ever had. This work was recovered from his computer and published following his death.

(...)

1993 saw the publication of Beautiful Losers: Essays on the Failure of American Conservatism, a collection of some of Sam’s best writing from the decade 1981-91. According to Scotchie, it remained Sam’s only book with the University of Missouri Press due to the scandal occasioned among the press’s faculty advisors by his essay on Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sam’s insistence on speaking forthrightly on the subject of race and racial differences would now come to play an increasing role in his career. American Renaissance, Jared Taylor’s monthly publication addressing racial issues from a white point of view, began publication in 1990, and by May 1994 Taylor felt confident enough to hold a public conference. Sam Francis was among the invited speakers. Of everything he said, the statement which caused the most widespread outrage was as follows:

The civilization that we as whites created in Europe and America could not have developed apart from the genetic endowments of the creating people, nor is there any reason to believe that the civilization can be successfully transmitted to a different people.

This is hardly a radical thought and should not be controversial. After all, even a dog pound cannot exist apart from the genetic endowments of dogs. But it would be enough to get him fired from the Washington Times when brought to editor Wes Pruden’s attention fifteen months later.

Sam’s termination was a national news story, but he declined requests for interviews, seemingly experiencing the episode as something of a liberation:

My column has actually gained newspapers since my defenestration at the Times. It’s true I lost my job and my Washington outlet, and that’s a blow, but it’s far from death. In the coming years, the Beltway right may be amazed to discover how little it has to do with the direction in which the country is moving, and I plan to be there when it finds out that no one else is paying much attention to its precious “limits” on what you can say and cannot say.

When Sam got wind that certain well-wishers were planning a protest outside the paper’s editorial offices, he put a stop to it. He was as ready to leave the Times as they were to be rid of him. Sylvia Crutchfield, a tireless fundraiser for right-wing causes, quietly made it possible for Sam to remain in the Washington area, even providing him with personal office space at the Henry Lee House in Alexandria, VA. He remained as busy and prolific as ever.

Sam’s explicitness on race set him apart from some of his longtime colleagues. Before addressing the American Renaissance conference, Scotchie explains:

Sam showed a draft [of his talk] to Tom Fleming. The latter advised against delivering it. Sam had a key position at the Washington Times. Why risk it? Were the knives already out? […] In a talk with this author, Fleming said Sam was essentially going to give his head on a platter to his legion of enemies.

I read Chronicles from 1997 until after Sam’s death, and I well remember how Sam’s racial views contrasted with those of the other editors and contributors. Sam called for whites to organize on the explicit basis of race and pursue their collective interests without apology. Tom Fleming preferred to accuse anyone who demonstrated knowledge of or interest in race of being a “biological determinist.” This was, of course, a straw man. All informed racialists know that racial differences are statistical in character, not determinative. Moreover, racial identity politics has very little to do with the theoretical question of how much human behavior is explicable by biology. Fleming even took a couple of rhetorical pokes at American Renaissance before Sam asked him to desist. Other Chronicles writers were not above dismissing the importance of “skin color,” an infallible sign of cluelessness in racial matters. Sam’s racialism continued to be tolerated, however, as it almost certainly would not have been from a newer or younger contributor. Moreover, reader surveys revealed that a large percentage of the magazine’s audience subscribed mainly in order to read Sam. They needed him more than he needed them.

(...)

Perhaps Sam’s most important statement on race is the essay “Roots of the White Man,” published in the November and December 1996 issues of American Renaissance. It was written in response to Jared Taylor’s argument that Western culture gives “priorities to considerations of fairness over the exercise of pure power.” Sam did not disagree, but thought Taylor came too close to identifying the white man’s distinctive character with its modern liberal expressions. Looking back farther into history, to the days of the earliest Indo-Europeans or Aryans, he found our ancestors to be marked especially by three traits: belief in a cosmic order, a restless dynamism, and greater individuation that the other races of mankind.

Furthermore, Aryan man is marked by a restless Faustian dynamism “clear enough in their earliest and most obvious habit of invading other people’s territories and conquering them.” Later this expressed itself in a more general love of travel, maritime exploration, colonization and discovery, the drive to uncover the secret workings of nature. Aryan man’s descendants

have cured diseases, shrunk distances, raised cities out of jungles and deserts, constructed technologies that replace and transcend human strength, restored lost languages, recovered forgotten histories, stared into the heart of distant galaxies, and reached into the recesses of the atom. No other people has even dreamed of these achievements.

This dynamism, in Francis’s view, explains the relative resistance of European man to despotism and enslavement. The typical Aryan political form is a broad aristocratic republic of arms-bearing citizens in which everyone is free to state his opinion, and rulers are constrained by the need to maintain the consent of those they rule. Aryan man “resists and rebels against any effort to induce the passivity that allows despotism to flourish.”

Aryan man is also marked by a greater degree of individuation that the other races of mankind. This is true even in their bodily traits, but more importantly in the variety of character reflected in their myths and literature. Such individuation should be distinguished from modern “individualism” which justifies the neglect or even betrayal of the larger social formations of which each individual is a part.

Western man today suffers from the excess or misapplication of his traditional virtues. He has succumbed, e.g., to the belief that his values are universal and that his outlook and achievements can be extended to the entire human race. Hence modern liberal enthusiasm for “exporting democracy” and inviting immigration from the entire world. We should respect the right of non-Aryan people to live according to their own very different traditions, but also insist on their exclusion from our territories.

If America’s political right was not ready for such racial explicitness, there were growing signs in the 1990s of a new willingness at least to reconsider the prudence of allowing mass immigration. In 1992, National Review published Peter Brimelow’s “Rethinking Immigration,” later expanded into the book Alien Nation (1995) and brought out by a mainstream New York publisher. In 1999, Brimelow would establish the website VDare.com, which carried Sam’s columns.

(...)

In 2002, David Frum published “Unpatriotic Conservatives,” an attack on right wing opponents of the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Sam responded as follows:

The paleos in general are disaffected not from the country itself but from the determination of the US government to wage unnecessary wars that either border on the unjust or go well over the line of injustice, wars that are unprovoked and not clearly in the interests of the nation, and wars that, even if victorious, may lead to so many entanglements, complications, injustices and costs (human, economic, diplomatic, technological) that they are better avoided regardless of their moral character. What most paleos have written about the Iraq war has been along these lines—lines that are perfectly consistent with and indeed reflect a serious patriotism, as opposed to the kind of sophomoric chauvinism that demands blind obedience to whatever wars the government launches.

Respect has its origins in fear

On Respect Between the Sexes

We live in an age when ordinary standards of civility have collapsed yet somehow there is universal agreement that even morons and criminals deserve to be treated with “respect.” We are urged to extend respect even to other species and the planet as a whole. Sometimes self-respect is enjoined upon us. Within my experience, the most common such injunction is addressed to men, who exhorted ad nauseam to respect women. It would be a bold fellow indeed who presumed to disagree. When was the last time you heard anyone suggest that men ought to hold women in contempt?

In fact, it took me several decades of living in this world before I realized that I had never once heard anyone speak of the desirability of having respect flow in the opposite direction as well. But shouldn’t we want to see mutual respect between the sexes? And is it reasonable to expect male respect for women never to falter in the absence of any reciprocity?

Talk of the respect men owe to women is not exactly new, either. In Victorian Britain, land of old-fashioned gallantry, one sometimes heard references to “the respect due to a lady.” But a closer look reveals that respect was not always their due. For example, I recall reading an anecdote from that era concerning a woman who was successfully prosecuted for cruelty to animals. In reporting on the case, a newspaper remarked that the defendant had “forfeited the respect due to her sex.” In other words, she was rightly punished for her actions as any man would have been.

(...)

Strictly speaking, “the respect due to a lady” is an inaccurate figure of speech. The merely biological fact of having been born female clearly does not entitle anyone to respect. What the Victorians really meant was that every woman should enjoy a presumption of respectability—i.e., should be treated with respect “on credit,” as it were—unless and until her behavior proved her unworthy. A sexual indiscretion was one important way in which a woman could lose respectability, of course, but there were others. Savagely flogging a defenseless horse is not ladylike, as that Victorian newspaper reporter correctly perceived.

In other words, respect in the proper sense must be earned by one’s behavior. A presumption of respectability is a mere point of courtesy, and may apply to men as well. Demands for universal respect are in part symptomatic of a decline in conceptual clarity, specifically, a growing inability to distinguish between genuine respect and mere civility.

Perhaps the advocates of “respecting women” assume any fellow deserving the slightest regard from the ladies can be certain of getting it in full. But I am not so sure. Women have participated in the general decline in civility characteristic of our time. They swear and tell dirty jokes as only sailors used to do, and even saying “please” and “thank you” may be too much to expect from some of them. I have on occasion been simply shocked at the rudeness I have observed women practice both toward myself and to other men, and I have heard other men make similar observations. This is less likely to be a response to male unworthiness than a failure to socialize our daughters properly. They might have benefitted from being taught early in life by some authority figure such as their parents that women should treat men with some minimal degree of civility. This ought to be possible, for women have clearly internalized the message that men owe them unlimited respect with marvelous success.

If we want to consider the matter of respect between the sexes thoroughly, we must start our inquiry from the beginning, and that means asking where the phenomenon we call respect comes from. This question comes under the heading of what the philosopher Nietzsche called the “genealogy of morals.” For respect is a moral idea and found in many forms, from the crudest to the most refined. Yet its origins are best grasped not in the highly civilized and ceremonious forms of etiquette which might be found (for example) at a royal court, but precisely at the very lowest and crudest levels of human existence.

If the reader wishes to go where he may hear respect discussed most frequently and with the greatest possible sense of practical urgency, I recommend he visit a maximum-security prison. Inmates obsess over the “respect” they believe themselves owed by others, and are beside themselves with rage when they do not get it. Wardens must run a tight ship to prevent mutual demands for respect from boiling over into deadly riots.

It does not take an intelligent observer very long to realize that what jailbirds mean by respect is simply that other people should be afraid of them. At its most basic and primitive level, respect is fear, specifically the fear of physical violence or death. At the dawn of human history, and even earlier in primate bands, life was harsh and unpredictable. A victim of aggression could not simply call up the police to enforce laws or attorneys and judges to regulate disputes. To avoid being victimized by others, it was useful to respond as aggressively as possible to any threat. Even today, after many centuries of civilization, social environments like this can still be found. Think of playgrounds with insufficient adult supervision, or urban slums—and most especially in the prisons where so many slum-dwelling “badasses” end up. Such men will be happy to regale you with plenty of talk about respect, but they never mean by it anything much going beyond the sheer physical fear they wish to arouse in others so as not to be victimized by them.

(...)

This origin in the fear aroused by others’ power to harm us explains why we still teach children respect, as well as good behavior more generally, through punishment. It is what first teaches the child to respect its parents, then gradually to respect their wishes, and finally (in the most successful cases) to internalize the principles the parents mean to inculcate through the punishment. A whole history of human moral development, whether in the individual or the race, might be written as the narration of such a process of increasingly refined and internalized discipline. But the beginning of moral education lies in fear; and since the world in a sense begins anew every time a child is born, fear can never be dispensed with entirely.

Just as human coexistence and religious worship took a cruder form in primitive societies from what can be observed today, so relations between the sexes were probably not originally marked by any very ennobling conception of male gallantry or female decorum, nor by any very demanding sense of honor in either sex. Many still-observable sex differences are traceable to the sheer fact that men are on average a good deal bigger and stronger than women, so much so that the average man is physically capable of killing the average woman with his bare hands. In a state of savagery, a man can get sex or anything else he happens to want from a woman (e.g., foodstuffs) simply by using force. He can also seriously harm or kill her out of mere anger.

Such male behavior is, of course, sternly punished by law in all civilized societies. But the danger of rape or other violence from uncivilized men must have had at least one positive consequence: primitive women probably respected men in the original sense of the term, viz., by being afraid of them. If they pressed a man too far, they might find themselves in serious danger. This set some limits upon how bad their behavior could get. In a shameless feminist girlboss society of “liberated” females, there really are not many such limits.

And it is not as if women had no means of countering male violence, real or merely threatened. Most of female psychology comes from their evolved ability to get what they want without using force. Women attain their ends using lies, deceit, scheming, manipulation, backbiting, innuendo, and a whole arsenal of ugly tricks whose only common denominator is an avoidance of direct confrontation and force such as would correctly be described as “unmanly” if practiced by a male. The battle of the sexes, in other words, is a battle between force and cunning, and as in other contexts, cunning usually proves more effective.

Even in civilized societies, men continue to oppose force to cunning in dealing with women, but the force is generally that of law rather than their fists. Traditional European marriage law, for example, granted primary custody of children to their father. As Hobbes saw, there was nothing natural or necessary about this:

If there be no contract, the dominion is in the mother. For in the condition of mere nature, where there are no matrimonial laws, it cannot be known who is the father unless it be declared by the mother. And therefore the right of dominion over the child dependeth upon her will, and is consequently hers. (Leviathan I:20)

Paternal investment in offspring is very rare even in the great apes which are our closest evolutionary cousins, probably because apes do not grasp the causal connection between mating and reproduction. Fatherhood in more than the bare biological sense is not a fact of nature but created by the laws of matrimony, established once primitive men discovered their own contribution to reproduction. It was quickly found that men would invest heavily in children if they could be certain the children were theirs. Marriage began as a male invention designed to give them paternity confidence.

We may be sure women objected to the idea of lifelong marriage when it was first introduced, for it meant they could not longer mate as they pleased. In practice, this meant mating exclusively with high-status men: in primitive hunter-gatherer bands, sixty percent of men fail to reproduce. Marriage allows more men to become fathers, but also means that some girls get stuck with low-status “losers.” Men were stronger, however, and carried their point, creating the patriarchal, male-headed family.

Eventually women themselves became the biggest champions of the institution of marriage—they have always been the more impressionable sex—whereas men more frequently sought to expand their reproductive potential with extramarital escapades. But we must not be deceived into thinking this familiar situation is how things began. As Nietzsche understood, the origins of moral institutions often bear little resemblance to the behavior observed in more civilized eras and societies. Marriage was almost certainly invented by men in response to their discovery of fatherhood. Its advantages over instinctive Darwinian mating must have quickly become apparent. Perhaps the best testament to the institution’s success is the ease with which later generations of men were brought to believe their women “naturally monogamous.”

We may hope that the force of law and social shaming were used more frequently than husbands’ fists in inculcating marital fidelity upon those first wives, but as we have already pointed out, force of some kind cannot be dispensed with. It is how respect first arises, and is the original instrument of moral training, whether of the child or of the human race as a whole.

And in primitive societies that do not enforce monogamy, men as a group do not enjoy a great deal of respect from women. I once attended a lecture by the late anthropologist Henry Harpending, who spent much time with the bushmen of the Kalahari. He reported that women in bushman society commonly regard the men as silly creatures. Most of the time they seem to wish the men would just go away and leave them alone.

It struck me upon hearing this that Dr. Harpending need not have travelled all the way to the deserts of Namibia to observe such a society. We Americans have been instructed for several decades now that women can do everything men can do. Their professional careers can be just as successful and lucrative provided only they are not “discriminated against”—and any failure of work to be lucrative and “fulfilling” for them is proof of such discrimination. Lesbianism is a perfectly legitimate alternative to marriage, and it is a moral outrage if such women are not allowed to adopt or conceive through artificial insemination. Women have a right to divorce their husbands for any reason or for no reason at all, and are not to be criticized for separating their children from their father, who is merely an optional add-on and not a necessary part of the family. In short, as we’ve been told, a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle. And the thanks men get for stoically putting up with all of this—they have not, after all, had much choice—is to be portrayed as “abusers” by feminists with masochistic fantasies!

Declining phases of civilization are marked by a recrudescence of the primitive. The “women’s liberation” movement has in effect made the ways of some of the most backward peoples known to anthropology into an ideal which our own society is condemned for failing to match. But our failure has not been for any lack of trying. Radical changes in marital and employment law over the past several decades have been motivated by a determination to render men superfluous (although this has often been done by increasing women’s dependence upon the state, i.e., upon men as a faceless collective). The result is a society in which women regard men as a kind of optional economic resource and occasional sperm donor. Why depend upon a husband to provide for you when a “family” court can simply extract resources from him by force? It is impossible that women should continue to respect men under such circumstances.

Samuel Johnson wrote: “Nature has given women so much power that the law has very wisely given them little.” This is correct. The tendency of law in traditionally arranged Western societies has been to make up for the natural advantages women enjoy in the battle of the sexes. Reforming the laws to increase women’s natural power rather than mitigating it results in an unworkable imbalance. When we take from men the possibility of using the force of law and institutions against women, yet leave women their full powers of sexual attraction and cunning, we get not equality but female despotism. And there are no grounds for hoping that women will prove an exception to the rule that power corrupts. “Liberated” women simply run roughshod over their own families and society as a whole.

I cannot furnish the objective data I might which for in this matter, but I do catch wind of relevant anecdotes, such as the wife who starts filling out divorce papers any time her husband does not let her have her way. Knowing what would be in store for himself and his children, the unfortunate husband simply gives in every time.

It would be hard to exaggerate how unnatural and unhealthy such a relationship is. It is difficult to imagine likely that even the woman herself is happy with it. Normal women want to respect their husbands, but are unable to do so as long as they are permitted to wield arbitrary power over them. Most men also sincerely enjoy gratifying their wives’ wishes where possible, but this cannot mean submitting to their commands under threat of being hauled into divorce court.

As Johnson seems to have perceived, manhood relies on the force of law in a way that femininity does not (at least assuming men do not want to go back to simply using their fists). Respect between the sexes can be re-established, but not by mindlessly exhorting women to it, as is now done with men. The laws governing work and family must be restored to something like their former state, returning to men their ability to support a wife and children as well as the proper legal authority that goes with this role. In effect, men get respect from women by demanding it. It would, admittedly, be nice if women could learn to respect men out of sheer recognition of the goodness of our hearts, but this is simply not how respect works. Respect has its origins in fear, just as all authority relies ultimately upon force.

Women who accept the traditional conditions of marriage and fulfill their duties as wives and mothers to the best of their abilities will most often find themselves enjoying the respect of their men. If and when that happens, perhaps we will finally cease to be deafened by female demands for “respect.

Culture of Critique Expanded and Updated - review

The Culture of Critique: An Evolutionary Analysis of Jewish Involvement in Twentieth-Century Intellectual and Political Movements, 3rd edition
Kevin MacDonald
Antelope Hill Publishing, 2025 (recently banned on Amazon)
666+c pages, $39.89 paperback

In the later half of the twentieth century, the United States of America—hitherto the world’s most powerful and prosperous country—opened its borders to hostile foreign multitudes, lost its will to enforce civilized standards of behavior upon blacks and other “minority groups,” began enforcing novel “antidiscrimination” laws in a manner clearly discriminatory against its own founding European stock, repurposed its institutions of higher education for the inculcation of radical politics and maladaptive behavior upon the young, and submitted its foreign and military policy to the interests of a belligerent little country half way around the world. In the process, we destroyed our inherited republican institutions, wasted vast amounts of blood and treasure, and left a trail of blighted lives in a country which had formerly taken for granted that each rising generation would be better off than the last. One-quarter of the way into the twenty-first century, the continued existence of anything deserving the name “United States of America” would seem very much in doubt. What on earth happened?

While there is plenty of blame to go around, including some that rightfully belongs with America’s own founding stock, the full story cannot be honestly told without paying considerable attention to the rise of Eastern European Jews to elite status.

This population is characterized by a number of positive traits, including high verbal intelligence and an overall average IQ of 111. They typically have stable marriages, practice high-investment parenting, and enjoy high levels of social trust within their own community. In their European homelands they lived for many centuries in shtetls, closed townships composed exclusively of Jews, carefully maintaining social and (especially) genetic separation from the surrounding, usually Slavic population. This was in accord with an ancient Jewish custom going back at least to the Biblical Book of Numbers, in which the prophet Balaam tells the children of Israel “you shall be a people that shall dwell alone.”

If one wants to preserve social and genetic separation, few methods are more reliable than the cultivation of negative affect toward outsiders. This is what was done in such traditional, religiously organized Jewish communities: gentiles were considered treif, or ritually unclean, and Jewish children were encouraged to think of them as violent drunkards best avoided apart from occasional self-interested economic transactions.

Following the enlightenment and the French Revolution, Jews were “emancipated” from previous legal disabilities, but ancient habits of mind are not changed as easily as laws. One consequence was the attraction of many newly-emancipated Jews to radical politics. Radicals by definition believe there is something fundamentally wrong and unjust about the societies in which they live, which disposes them to form small, tightly-knit groups of like-minded comrades united in opposition to an outside world conceived as both hostile and morally inferior. In other words, radicalism fosters a social and mental environment similar to a shtetl. It is not really such a big step as first appears from rejecting a society because its members are ritually unclean and putative idolaters to rejecting it for being exploitative, capitalist, racist, and anti-Semitic. Jews themselves have often been conscious of this congruence between radicalism and traditional Jewish life: the late American neoconservative David Horowitz, e.g., wrote in his memoir Radical Son: “What my parents had done in joining the Communist Party and moving to Sunnyside was to return to the ghetto.”

By the end of the nineteenth century, the Eastern European Jewish population had grown beyond the capacity of traditional forms of Jewish economic activity to support it, resulting in widespread and sometimes dire poverty. Many turned to fanatical messianic movements of a religious or political character. Then, beginning in the 1890s, an increasing number of these impoverished and disaffected Jews started migrating to the United States. Contrary to a widespread legend, the great majority were not “fleeing pogroms”—they were looking for economic opportunity.

Even so, many Jews brought their radicalism and hostility to gentile society with them to their new homeland, and these persisted even in the absence of legal restrictions upon them and long after they had overcome their initial poverty. Jewish sociologist Seymour Martin Lipset has written colorfully of the countless wealthy and successful American Jewish “families which around the breakfast table, day after day, in Scarsdale, Newton, Great Neck, and Beverly Hills have discussed what an awful, corrupt, immoral, undemocratic, racist society the United States is.”

Over the course of the twentieth century, these smart, ambitious, and ethnically well-networked Eastern European Jews rose to elite status in the academy, the communications media, law, business, and politics. By the 1960s, they had succeeded in replacing the old Protestant ruling class with an alliance between themselves, other “minorities” with grudges against the American majority, and a sizeable dose of loyalty-free White sociopaths on the make. Unlike the old elite it replaced, the new rulers were at best suspicious of—and often actually hostile toward—the people they came to govern, and we have already enumerated some of the most disastrous consequences of their rule in our opening paragraph.

Kevin MacDonald’s The Culture of Critique describes several influential movements created and promoted by Jews during the twentieth century in the course of their rise. It is the best book you will find on the Jewish role in America’s decline. First published by Praeger in 1998, a second paperback edition augmented with a new Preface appeared in 2002. Now, twenty-three years later, he has brought out a third edition of the work through Antelope Hill Publishing. In addition to expanding the earlier editions’ accounts of Boasian Anthropology, Freudian Psychoanalysis, various Marxist or quasi-Marxist forms of radicalism, and Jewish immigration activism, he has added an entirely new chapter on neoconservatism. As he explains:

I argue that these movements are attempts to alter Western societies in a manner that would neutralize or end anti-Semitism and enhance the prospects for Jewish group continuity and upward mobility. At a theoretical level, these movements are viewed as the outcome of conflicts of interest between Jews and non-Jews in the construction of culture and in various public policy issues.

This edition is fully 40 percent longer than its predecessor, yet a detailed table of contents makes it easier for readers to navigate.

*   *   *

We shall have a detailed look at the chapter on “The Boasian School of Anthropology and the Decline of Darwinism in the Social Sciences,” since it is both representative of the work as a whole and significantly augmented over the version in previous editions.

Anthropology was still a relatively new discipline in America at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, but it enjoyed a promising theoretical foundation in Darwinian natural selection and the rapidly developing science of genetics. Darwinists and Mendelians, however, were opposed by Lamarckians who believed that acquired characteristics could be inherited: e.g., that if a man spent every day practicing the piano and then fathered a son, his son might have an inborn advantage in learning the piano. This idea was scientifically discredited by the 1930s, but long remained popular among Jewish intellectuals for nonscientific reasons, as a writer cited by MacDonald testifies:

Lenz cites an “extremely characteristic” statement of a Jewish intellectual: “The denial of the racial importance of acquired characters favours race hatred.” The obvious interpretation of such sentiments is that Jewish intellectuals opposed the theory of natural selection because of its negative political implications.

In one famous case a Jewish researcher committed suicide when the fraudulent nature of his study in support of Lamarckism was exposed.

Franz Boas was among the Jewish intellectuals to cling to Lamarckism long after its discrediting. He had what Derek Freeman describes as an “obscurantist antipathy to genetics” that extended even to opposing genetic research. This attitude was bound up with what Carl Degler called his “life-long assault on the idea that race was a primary source of the differences to be found in the mental or social capabilities of human groups.” He did not arrive at this position as a result of disinterested scientific inquiry. Rather, as Degler explains, he thought racial explanations “undesirable for society” and had “a persistent interest in pressing his social values upon the profession and the public.”

Boas appeared to wear his Jewishness lightly; MacDonald remarks that he “sought to be identified foremost as a German and as little as possible as a Jew.”  Anthropologist and historian Leonard B. Glick wrote:

He did not acknowledge a specifically Jewish cultural or ethnic identity. . . . To the extent that Jews were possessed of a culture, it was . . . strictly a matter of religious adherence. . . . He was determined . . . not to be classified as a member of any group.

Yet such surface appearances can be misleading. From a very early age, Boas was deeply concerned with anti-Semitism and felt alienated from the Germany of his time. These appear to have been the motives for his emigration to America. He also maintained close associations with the Jewish activist community in his new homeland. Especially in his early years at Columbia, most of his students were Jewish, and of the nine whom Leslie White singles out as his most important protegés, six were Jews. According to David S. Koffman: “these Jews tended to marry other Jews, be buried in Jewish cemeteries, and socialize with fellow Jews, all core features of Jewish ethnicity, though they conceived of themselves as agents of science and enlightenment, not Jewish activists.”

Boas was also dependent on Jewish patronage. In the 1930s, for instance, he worked to set up a research program to “attack the racial craze” (as he put it). The resulting Council of Research of the Social Sciences was, as Elazar Barkan acknowledges in The Retreat of Scientific Racism (1993) “largely a façade for the work of Boas and his students.” Financial support was principally Jewish, since others declined solicitations. Yet Boas was aware of the desirability of disguising Jewish motivations and involvement publicly, writing to Felix Warburg: “it seemed important to show the general applicability of the results to all races both from the scientific point of view and in order to avoid the impression that this is a purely Jewish undertaking.”

One of Boas’s Jewish students remarked that young Jews of her generation felt they had only three choices in life—go live in Paris, hawk communist newspapers on street corners, or study anthropology at Columbia. The latter option was clearly perceived as a distinctively “Jewish” thing to do. Why is this?

Many Jews have supplemented Jewish advocacy with activism on behalf of “pluralism” and other ethnic “minority groups.” Boas himself, for example, maintained close connections with the NAACP and the Urban League. David S. Lewis has described such activities as an effort to “fight anti-Semitism by remote control.” And anthropology itself as conceived by Boas was not merely a scholarly discipline but an extension of these same concerns.

Much of the actual fieldwork conducted by Boas and his students focused on the American Indian. In a passage new to this edition, MacDonald quotes from David S. Koffman’s The Jews’ Indian (2019) on the Jewish motivations that frequently lay behind their work:

Jewishness shaped the profession’s engagement with its practical object of study, the American Indian. Jews’ efforts—presented as the efforts of science itself—to salvage, collect, and preserve disappearing American Indian culture was a form of ventriloquism. [Yet they] assumed their own Jewishness would remain an invisible and insignificant force in shaping the ideas they would use to shape ideas about others.

Boasian anthropologists did not draw any sharp distinction between their professional and their political concerns:

Political action formed a part of many anthropologists’ sense of the intellectual mission of the field. Their findings, and the framing of distinct cultures, each worthy of careful attention in its own right, mattered to social existence in the United States. Their scholarship on Native American cultures developed alongside their personal and political work on behalf of Jewish causes.

Koffman highlights the case of Boas’s protegé Edward Sapir:

Sapir’s Jewish background continuously influenced and intersected with his scholarship on American Indians. Sapir’s biography shows a fascinating parallel preoccupation with both Native and Jewish social issues. These tracks run side by side, concerned as both were with parallel questions about ethnic survival, adaptability, dignity, cultural autonomy, and ethnicity.

Some Jews from Boas’s circle of influence even went to work for the US government’s Bureau of Indian Affairs, where they “consistently linked Indian uplift with an articulation of minority rights and cultural pluralism.” In this way, writes Koffman, “Jewish enlightened self-interest impacted the course of American Indian life in the middle of the twentieth century.”

Boas had a number of gentile students as well, of course, especially in the later part of his career. Yet some observers have commented upon differences in the thinking and motivations of his Jewish and gentile followers. While the rejection of racial explanations was a moral crusade for many of the Jews, as it was for Boas himself, his gentile students were more inclined to view the matter simply as a theoretical issue. Alfred Kroeber, for example, once impatiently remarked that “our business is to promote anthropology rather than to wage battles on behalf of tolerance.”

Two of Boas’s best known gentile disciples were Margeret Meade and Ruth Benedict, and it may not be an accident that both of these women were lesbians. As Sarich and Miele write in Race: The Reality of Human Difference (2004): “Their sexual preferences are relevant because developing a critique of traditional American values was as much a part of the Boasian program in anthropology as was their attacks on eugenics and nativism.” More generally, they note, “the Boasians felt deeply estranged from American society and the male WASP elites they were displacing in anthropology.” Jewish or not, they saw themselves as a morally superior ingroup engaged in a struggle against a numerically superior outgroup. In this respect, they formed a historical link between the radical cells and shtetls of the old world and the hostile elite ruling America today.

Boas posed as a skeptic and champion of methodological rigor when confronted with theories of cultural evolution or genetic influence on human differences, but as the evolutionary anthropologist Leslie White pointed out, the burden of proof rested lightly on Boas’s own shoulders: his “historical reconstructions are inferences, guesses, and unsupported assertions [ranging] from the possible to the preposterous. Almost none is verifiable.”

MacDonald writes:

An important technique of the Boasian school was to cast doubt on general theories of human evolution . . . by emphasizing the vast diversity and chaotic minutiae of human behevior, as well as the relativism of standards of evaluation. The Boasians argued that general theories of cultural evolution must await a detailed cataloguing of cultural diversity, but in fact no general theories emerged from this body of research in the ensuing half-century of its dominance of the profession. Leslie White, an evolutionary anthropologist whose professional opportunities were limited because of his theoretical orientation, noted that because of its rejection of fundamental scientific activities such as generalization and classification, Boasian anthropology should be classed more as an anti-theory than a theory of human culture.

Boas brooked no dissent from his followers:

Individuals who disagreed with the leader, such as Clark Wissler, were simply excluded from the movement. Wissler was a member of the Galton society, which promoted eugenics, and accepted the theory that there is a gradation of cultures from lowest to highest, with Western civilization at the top.

Among Boas’s most egregious sins against the scientific spirit was a study he produced at the request of the US Immigration Commission called into being by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907. This was eventually published as Changes in Bodily Form of Descendants of Immigrants. It maintained the extremely implausible thesis that the skulls of the children of immigrants to the US differed significantly from those of their parents—in spite of the influence of heredity, and due entirely to growing up in America. The paper came to be cited countless times by writers of textbooks and anyone who wished to deprecate the importance of heredity or stress that of environment.

Ninety years later, anthropologists Corey S. Sparks and Richard L. Janz reanalyzed Boas’s original data. While they stop short of accusing him of deliberate fraud, they did find that his data fail to support his conclusions. In MacDonald’s words:

Boas made inflated claims about the results: very minor changes in cranial index were described as changes of “type” so that Boas was claiming that within one generation immigrants developed the long-headed type characteristic of northwest Europeans. Several modern studies show that cranial shape is under strong genetic influence. [Sparks and Janz’s] reanalysis of Boas’s data indicated that no more than one percent of the variation between groups could be ascribed to the environmental effects of immigration.

In short, Boas’s study was not disinterested science but propaganda in a political battle over immigration. At a minimum, he was guilty of sloppy work inspired by wishful thinking.

Boas’s actual anthropological studies, such as those on the Kwakiutl Indians of Vancouver Island, contributed little to human knowledge. But this was not where his talent lay: his true achievement was in the realm of academic politics. He built a movement that served as an extension of himself long after his death, capturing and jealously controlling anthropological institutions and publications, and making it difficult for those who dissented from his scientifically groundless views to achieve professional success. As MacDonald writes:

By 1915 his followers controlled the American Anthropological Association and held a two-thirds majority on its executive board. In 1919 Boas could state that “most of the anthropological work done at the present time in the United States” was done by his students at Columbia. By 1926 every major department of anthropology was headed by Boas’s students, the majority of whom were Jewish.

Boas strenuously promoted the work of his disciples, but rarely cited works of people outside his group except to disparage them. A section new to this third edition explains how his influential student Melville Herskovits also blocked from publication and research funding those not indebted to him or not supporting his positions. Margaret Meade’s fairy tale of a sexually liberated Samoa, on the other hand, became the bestselling anthropological work of all time due almost entirely to zealous promotion by her fellow Boasians at prominent American universities.

Among the more obvious biases of anthropological work carried out by Boas’s disciples was a nearly complete ignoring of warfare and violence among the peoples they studied. Their ethnographic studies, such as Ruth Benedict’s account of the Zuni Indians in Patterns of Culture (1934), promoted romantic primitivism as a means of critiquing modern Western civilization. Works like Primitive War (1949) by Harry Holbert Turney-High, which documented the universality and savagery of war, were simply ignored. As MacDonald explains:

The behavior of primitive peoples was bowdlerized while the behavior of European peoples was not only excoriated as uniquely evil but also as responsible for all extant examples of warfare among primitive peoples. From this perspective, it is only the fundamental inadequacy of European culture that prevents an idyllic world free from between-group conflict.

Leslie White wrote that “Boas has all the attributes of the head of a cult, a revered charismatic teacher and master, literally worshiped by disciples whose permanent loyalty has been effectively established.” MacDonald describes his position as closer to that of a Hasidic Rebbe among his followers than to the leader of a genuinely scientific research program—the results of which can never be known in advance.

Due to the success of Boas’s mostly Jewish disciples in gaining control of institutional anthropology, by the middle of the twentieth century it became commonplace for well-read American laymen to refer to human differences in cultural terms. Western Civilization was merely different from, not better than, the ways of headhunters and cannibals. A vague impression was successfully propagated to the public that “science had proven” the equality of the races; few indeed understood that the “proof” consisted in the scientists who thought otherwise having been driven into unemployment. Objective research into race and racial differences largely ceased, and an intellectual atmosphere was created in which many imagined that the opening of America’s borders to the world would make little practical difference.

Space precludes us from looking in similar detail at all the book’s chapters, but we must give the reader an idea of the material new to this third edition. Some of the most important is found in an 85-page Preface, and concerns the rise of Jews in the American academic world. Boasian anthropology may be seen in hindsight as an early episode in this rise, but Boas died in 1942 and our main story here concerns the postwar period. As MacDonald writes:

The transformation of the faculty was well under way in the 1950s and by the late 1960s was largely complete. It was during this period that the image of the radical leftist professor replaced the image of the ivory tower professor—the unworldly person at home with his books, pipe, and tweed jacket, totally immersed in discussions of Renaissance poetry.

The old academic elite had been better educated than the public at large, of course, but saw themselves as trustees of the same Christian European civilization, and did not desire radical changes to the society in which they lived. Today’s representative professor “almost instinctively loathes the traditional institutions of European-American culture: its religion, customs, manners, and sexual attitudes.”

This matters, because the academy is a crucial locus of moral and intellectual authority:

Contemporary views on issues like race, gender, immigration are manufactured in the academy (especially elite universities), disseminated throughout the media and the lower levels of the educational system, and ultimately consumed by the educated and not-so-educated public. Newspaper articles and television programs on these issues routinely include quotes from academic experts.

By 1968 Jews, who made up less than three percent of the US population, constituted 20 percent of the faculty of elite American colleges and universities, with overrepresentation most pronounced among younger faculty. Studies found Jewish faculty well to the left of other academics, more supportive of student radicals, and more likely to approve relaxing standards in order to recruit non-White faculty and students. By 1974, a study of articles published in the top twenty academic journals found that Jews made up 56 percent of the social scientists and 61 percent of the humanities scholars.

A possibly extreme but telling example of left-wing bias is Jonathan Haidt’s informal 2011 survey at a convention of social psychologists, reputedly the most left-leaning area of academic psychology. Haidt found only three participants out of 1000 willing publicly to label themselves “conservative.” He acknowledges that this discipline has evolved into a “tribal moral community” that shuns and ostracizes political conservatives, with the result that research conflicting with its core political attitudes is either not performed or is likely to be excluded from peer-reviewed journals.

MacDonald devotes considerable attention to a widely discussed 2012 paper “Why Are Professors Liberal?” by Neil Gross and Ethan Fosse. The authors argue that academics are more liberal than the population at large for three reasons. First and most importantly, due to the higher proportion of academics with advanced educational credentials, an effect they consider independent of the role IQ plays in helping obtain such credentials. MacDonald remarks that this liberal shift may be due either to socialization and conditioning in the graduate school environment or to perceived self-interest in adopting liberal views and/or identifying with an officially sanctioned victim group.

Second, Gross and Fosse believe liberalism results from academic’s greater tolerance for controversial ideas. MacDonald is dismissive of this proposal, writing that in his observation such tolerance does not exist outside the professoriate’s self-conception.

Third, they find that liberalism corelates with the larger fraction of the religiously unaffiliated in the academy. MacDonald points out that many of the religiously unaffiliated are probably Jews, and remarks that the study would have been more informative if race and Jewish ethnic background had been included as variables alongside religious affiliation.

Gross and Fosse acknowledge that their data can be interpreted in a number of ways, but their own argument is that

the liberalism of professors . . . is a function . . . of the systematic sorting of young adults who are already liberally—or conservatively—inclined into and out of the academic profession, respectively. We argue that the professoriate, along with a number of other knowledge work fields, has been “politically typed” as appropriate for and welcoming of people with broadly liberal political sensibilities, and as inappropriate for conservatives.

In other words, academic liberalism is the product of a natural sorting process similar to that which has resulted in a career such as nursing being typecast as appropriate for women. It should be emphasized, however, that much of this sorting is done by the academy itself, not by prospective academics: many professors unhesitatingly acknowledge their willingness to discriminate against conservative job candidates.

The Gross and Fosse study also fails to explore the way the meaning of being liberal or left wing has changed over the years. The academy was already considered left-leaning when the White Protestant ascendency was still intact. But in those days being liberal meant supporting labor unions and other institutions aimed at improving the lot of the (predominantly White) working class.

The New Left abandoned the White working class because it was insufficiently radical, desiring incremental improvements of its own situation rather than communist revolution. The large Jewish component of the New Left, typified by the Frankfurt School, was also shaken by Hitler’s success in gaining the support of German labor. So they abandoned orthodox Marxism in a search for aggrieved groups more likely to demand radical change. These they found in ethnic and sexual minority groups such as Blacks, feminists, and homosexuals. They also advocated for massive non-White immigration to dilute the power of the White majority, leave Jews less conspicuous, and recruit new ethnic groups easily persuadable to cultivate grievances against the dwindling White majority.

Today’s academy is a product of the New Left of the 1960s. While it is more “liberal” (in the American sense) than the general public on economic issues, what makes it truly distinctive is its attitudes on social issues: sexual liberation (including homosexuality and abortion), moral relativism, religion, church-state separation, the replacement of patriotism by cosmopolitan ideals, and the whole range of what has been called “expressive individualism.”

Sorting can explain how an existing ideological hegemony within the academy maintains itself, but not how it could have arisen in the first place. To account for the rise of today’s academic left, Gross and Fosse propose a conflict theory of successful intellectual movements. In particular, they cite sociological research indicating that such movements have three key ingredients: 1) they originate with people with high-status positions having complaints against the current environment, resulting in conflict with the status quo; 2) these intellectuals form cohesive and cooperative networks; and 3) this network has access to prestigious institutions and publication outlets.

This fits Kevin MacDonald’s theory of Jewish intellectual movements to a T. Indeed, since the academic left is so heavily Jewish, we are in part dealing with the same subject matter. Even Gross and Fosse show some awareness of this, as MacDonald writes:

Gross and Fosse are at least somewhat cognizant of the importance of Jewish influence. They deem it relevant to point out that Jews entered the academic world in large numbers after World War II and became overrepresented among professors, especially in elite academic departments in the social sciences.

So let us apply the Gross and Fosse three-part scheme to radical Jewish academics. First, Jews do indeed have a complaint against the environment in which they live, or rather two related complaints: the long history of anti-Semitism and the predominance of White Christian culture.

As MacDonald notes, “it is common for Jews to hate all manifestations of Christianity.” In his book Why Are Jews Liberals? (2009), Norman Podhoretz formulates this Jewish complaint as follows:

[The Jews] emerged from the Middle Ages knowing for a certainty that—individual exceptions duly noted—the worst enemy they had in the world was Christianity: the churches in which it was embodied—whether Roman Catholic or Russian Orthodox or Protestant—and the people who prayed in and were shaped by them.

Anti-Jewish attitudes, however, by no means depend on Christian belief. In the nineteenth century Jews began to be criticized as an economically successful alien race intent on subverting national cultures. Accordingly, the complaint of many Jews today is no longer merely Christianity but the entire civilization created by Europeans in both its religious and its secular aspects.

From this point it is a very short step to locating the source of anti-Semitism in the nature of European-descended people themselves. The Frankfurt School took this step, and the insurgent Jewish academic left followed them. MacDonald writes:

This explicit or implicit sense that Europeans themselves are the problem is the crux of the Jewish complaint. [It] has resonated powerfully among Jewish intellectuals. Hostility to the people and culture of the West was characteristic of all the Jewish intellectual movements of the left that came to be ensconced in the academic world of the United States and other Western societies.

The second item in Gross and Fosse’s list of the traits of successful intellectual movements is that their partisans form cohesive, cooperative networks. All the Jewish movements studied by Kevin MacDonald have done this, as he has been at pains to emphasize. Group strategies outcompete individualist strategies in the intellectual and academic world just as they do in politics and the broader society. It does not matter that Western science is an individualistic enterprise in which people can defect from any group consensus easily in response to new discoveries or more plausible theories. The Jewish intellectual movements studied by MacDonald are not scientific research programs at all, but “hermeneutic exercise[s] in which any and all events can be interpreted within the context of the theory.” These authoritarian movements thus represent a corruption of the Western scientific ideal, yet that does nothing to prevent them from being effective in the context of academic politics.

Finally, Gross and Fosse note that the most successful intellectual movements are those with access to prestigious institutions and publication outlets. This has clearly been true of the Jewish movements Kevin MacDonald has studied, as he himself notes:

The New York Intellectuals developed ties with elite universities, particularly Harvard, Columbia, the University of Chicago, and the University of California-Berkeley, while psychoanalysis and Boasian anthropology became entrenched throughout academia. The Frankfurt School intellectuals were associated with Columbia and the University of California-Berkeley, and their intellectual descendants are dispersed through the academic world. The neoconservatives are mainly associated with the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins University, and they were able to get their material published by the academic presses at these universities as well as Cornell University.

The academic world is a top-down system in which the highest levels are rigorously policed to ensure that dissenting ideas cannot benefit from institutional prestige. The panic produced by occasional leaks in the system, as when the University of Chicago’s John Mearsheimer teamed up with Harvard’s Stephen Walt to offer some cautious criticisms of the Israel lobby, demonstrate the importance of obtaining and monopolizing academic prestige.

Moreover, once an institution has been captured by the partisans of a particular intellectual perspective, informal scholarly networks become de facto gatekeeping mechanisms, creating enormous inertia. As MacDonald writes: “there is tremendous psychological pressure to adopt the fundamental assumptions at the center of the power hierarchy of the discipline. It is not surprising that people [are] attracted to these movements because of the prestige associated with them.”

What MacDonald calls the final step in the transformation of the university into a bastion of the anti-White left is the creation since the 1970s of whole programs of study revolving around aggrieved groups:

My former university is typical of academia generally in having departments or programs in American Indian Studies, Africana Studies (formerly Black Studies), American Studies (whose subject matter emphasizes “How do diverse groups within the Americas imagine their identities and their relation to the United States?”), Asian and Asian-American Studies, Chicano and Latino Studies, Jewish Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. All of these departments and programs are politically committed to advancing their special grievances against Whites and their culture.

Although it is difficult to specify the exact linkage, the academic triumph of Jewish radicals was followed in short order by the establishment of these other pillars of the cultural left within the university.

As MacDonald notes, women make up an important component of the grievance coalition in academia, and not only in the area of “Women’s Studies.” They make up around 60 percent of PhDs and 80 percent of bachelor’s degrees in ethnic, gender and cultural studies.

Overall, compared to men, women are more in favor of leftist programs to end free speech and censor speech they disagree with. They are more inclined toward activism, and less inclined toward dispassionate inquiry; they are more likely to agree that hate speech is violence, that it’s acceptable to shout down a speaker, that controversial scientific findings should be censored, and that it should be illegal to say offensive things about minorities.

Such differences are likely due to women’s evolutionary selection for empathy and fear. No amount of bravado about “smashing the patriarchy” can conceal women’s tendency to timid conformism, and that is precisely what leads to success in academic grievance studies.

Although MacDonald does not consider feminism a fundamentally Jewish movement, many Jewish women have unquestionably played a prominent role within it, and it is marked by the same disregard of biological realities we observed in Boasian anthropology. The new Preface accordingly offers some brief remarks on Jewish lesbian and academic gender theorist Judith Butler. One of her leading ideas is that gender identity is “performative,” and unconstrained by genetic or hormonal influences. This leaves us free to rebel against the patriarchy by engaging in “subversive performances of various kinds.” Obviously, the contemporary transgender movement would count as an example of such a performance.

Jews have been greatly overrepresented in the student bodies of elite American universities for several decades, to a degree that their intelligence and academic qualifications cannot begin to account for:

Any sign that the enrollment of Jews at elite universities is less than about 20 percent is seen as indicative of anti-Semitism. A 2009 article in The Daily Princetonian cited data from Hillel [a Jewish campus organization] indicating that, with the exception of Princeton and Dartmouth, on average Jews made up 24 percent of Ivy League undergraduates. Princeton had only 13 percent Jews, leading to much anxiety and a drive to recruit more Jewish students. The result was extensive national coverage, including articles in The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education. The rabbi leading the campaign said she “would love 20 percent”—an increase from over six times the Jewish percentage in the population to around ten times.

According to Ron Unz:

These articles included denunciations of Princeton’s long historical legacy of anti-Semitism and quickly led to official apologies, followed by an immediate 30 percent rebound in Jewish numbers. During these same years, non-Jewish white enrollment across the entire Ivy League had dropped by roughly 50 percent, reducing those numbers to far below parity, but this was met with media silence or even occasional congratulations on the further “multicultural” progress of America’s elite education system.

The Preface to this new edition of The Culture of Critique also contains additions on the psychology of media influence and Jewish efforts to censor the internet, along with an updating of information on Jewish ownership and control of major communications media.

Chapter Three on “Jews and the Left” includes a new sixteen-page section “Jews as Elite in the USSR,” as well as shorter additions on Jews and McCarthyism, and even the author’s own reminiscences of Jewish participation in the New Left at the University of Wisconsin in his youth. The additions incorporate material from important works published since the second edition, including Solzhenitsyn’s Two Hundred Years Together (2002), Yuri Slezkine’s The Jewish Century (2004), and Philip Mendes’s Jews and the Left (2014).

Chapter Four on “Neoconservatism as a Jewish Movement” is new to this edition, although its core has already appeared in the author’s previous book Cultural Insurrections (2007) and elsewhere. MacDonald’s account of how the neocons maintained a self-image as a beleaguered and embattled minority even as they determined the destiny of the world’s most powerful country is an impressive testament to the unchanging nature of the Jewish shtetl mindset.

Chapter Five on “Jewish Involvement in the Psychoanalytic Movement” has been expanded with material on Freud’s Hungarian-Jewish disciple Sándor Ferenczi and the Budapest school of psychoanalysis.

Chapter Six on “The Frankfurt School of Social Research and the Pathologization of Gentile Group Allegiances” includes new biographical sketches of the major figures and cites extensively from the recently published private correspondences of Horkheimer and Adorno. A new section on Samuel H. Flowerman (based on the research of Andrew Joyce) throws light on the nexus between the Frankfurt School and influential Jews in the communications media. There is also expanded coverage of Jaques Derrida and the Dada movement.

Chapter Eight on “Jewish Shaping of US Immigration Policy” has been updated and corroborated using more recent scholarship by Daniel Okrent Daniel Tichenor, and Otis Graham, as well as Harry Richardson and Frank Salter’s Anglophobia (2023) on Jewish pro-immigration activism in Australia. MacDonald makes clear that Jewish pro-immigration activism was motivated by fear of an anti-Jewish movement among a homogeneous White Christian society, as occurred in Germany from 1933–1945) Moreover:

Nevertheless, despite its clear importance to the activist Jewish community [and its eventual tranformative effects], the most prominent sponsors of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965,

did their best to downplay the law’s importance in public discourse. National policymakers were well aware that the general public was opposed to increases in either the volume or diversity of immigration to the United States. . . . [However,] in truth the policy departures of the mid-1960s dramatically recast immigration patterns and concomitantly the nation. Annual admissions increased sharply in the years after the law’s passage. (Daniel Tichenor, Dividing Lines: The Politics of Immigration Control in America, Princeton University Press, 2002, p. 218)

The Conclusion, “Whither Judaism and the West?” is heavily updated from the previous version. MacDonald speculates on the possible rise of a new non-Jewish elite that might challenge Jewish hegemony in three key areas: the media, political funding, and the academy. He sees Elon Musk, with his support for Donald Trump’s populism and (relatively) free speech, as a possible harbinger of such an elite. Musk has commented explicitly on Jewish hostility to Whites and taken heat for it.

Regarding the media, MacDonald writes:

If the 2024 election shows anything, it’s that the legacy mainstream media is distrusted more than ever and has been effectively replaced among wide swaths of voters, especially young voters, by alternative media, particularly podcasts and social media. […] The influence of the legacy media, a main power base of the mainstream liberal-left Jewish community, appears to be in terminal decline.

A recent sign of the times was the eviction of the New York Times, National Public Radio, NBC and Politico from their Pentagon offices to make room for outlets such as One America News Network and Breitbart.

Jewish financial clout is still in place, but may be of diminishing importance as well. As of August 2024, twenty-two of the twenty-six top donors to the Trump campaign were gentiles, and only one Jew—Miriam Adelson at $100 million—made the top ten. (Musk eventually contributed around $300 million. The author quotes a description of all the wealthy people in attendance at Trump’s second inaugural, and only one of the six men named was Jewish. MacDonald notes that “most of these tycoons were likely just trying to ingratiate themselves with the new administration, but this is a huge change from the 2017 and suggests that they are quite comfortable with at least some of the sea changes Trump is pursuing.”

The university is the most difficult pillar of Jewish power to challenge, as MacDonald notes, “because hiring is rigorously policed to make sure new faculty and administrators are on the left.” There has recently been a challenge to Jewish interests in the academy by students protesting—or attempting to protest—Israeli actions in the Gaza strip. But Ron Unz vividly describes what can happen to such students:

At UCLA an encampment of peaceful protestors was violently attacked and beaten by a mob of pro-Israel thugs having no university connection but armed with bars, clubs, and fireworks, resulting in some serious injuries. Police stood aside while UCLA students were attacked by outsiders, then arrested some 200 of the former. Most of these students were absolutely stunned. For decades, they had freely protested on a wide range of political causes without ever encountering a sliver of such vicious retaliation. Some student organizations were immediately banned and the future careers of the protestors were harshly threatened.

Protesting Israel is not treated like protesting “heteronormativity.” Two Ivy League presidents were quickly forced to resign for allowing students to express themselves.

Despite this awesome display of continuing Jewish power, anti-White “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” policies are now under serious attack at American universities. MacDonald also notes that the academy is a less important a power base than either the media or political funding.

The Conclusion has also been updated with a consideration of whether multiculturalism may be backfiring on its Jewish creators as some members of the anti-White coalition turn to anti-Semitism.

It should be acknowledged that the insertion of new material into this updated edition required the deletion of a certain amount of the old. I was sorry to note, e.g., the removal of the table contrasting European and Jewish cultural forms, found on page xxxi of the second edition. So while everyone concerned with the question of Jewish influence should promptly procure this new third edition, I am not ready to part with my copy of the second.
